Identifying cohesive subgroups *

چکیده

Cohesive subgroups have always represented an important construct for sociologists who study individuals and organizations. In this article, I apply recent advances in the statistical modell ing of social network data to the task of identifying cohesive subgroups from social network data. Further, through simulated data, I describe a process for obtaining the probability that a given sample of data could have been obtained from a network in which actors were no more likely to engage in interaction with subgroup members than with members of other subgroups. I obtain the probability for a specific data set, and then, through further simulations, develop a model which can be applied to future data sets. Also through simulated data, I characterize the extent to which a simple hill-climbing algorithm recovers known subgroup memberships. I apply the algorithm to data indicating the extent of professional discussion among teachers in a high school, and I show the relationship between membership in cohesive subgroups and teachers ' orientations towards teaching.

Peripheries of cohesive subsets

Network analysts have developed a number of techniques for identifying cohesive subgroups in networks. In general, however, no consideration is given to actors that do not belong to a given group. In this paper, we explore ways of identifying actors that are not members of a given cohesive subgroup, but who are sufficiently well tied to the group to be considered peripheral members. We then use...

Fast determination of structurally cohesive subgroups in large networks

Structurally cohesive subgroups are a powerful and mathematically rigorous way to characterize network robustness. Their strength lies in the ability to detect strong connections among vertices that not only have no neighbors in common, but that may be distantly separated in the graph. Unfortunately, identifying cohesive subgroups is a computationally intensive problem, which has limited empiri...

Combining Biological Computation and Fuzzy-Based Methods for Organisationally Cohesive Subgroups

Cohesive subgroups in complicated employee relationships are commonly discovered and organised when personnel managers need to efficiently execute a job rotation. This provides employees with a better work life quality and encourages them to work more efficiently. Rearranging a small number of employees using electronic computation can be easily accomplished, but rearranging a larger number of ...

Mapping interactions within and between cohesive subgroups *

The structure of interactions and the pattern of influence in an organization can be characterized in terms of a map of interactions within and between cohesive subgroups. I extend the work of Festinger, Schachter and Back (Social Pressures in InformalGroups, 1950, Stanford University Press) who constructed a map based on the pattern of communication within and between apartment courts. In orde...

Automated Delineation of Subgroups in Web Video: A Medical Activism Case Study

Web 2.0 tools in general, and Web video in particular, provide new ways for activists to express their viewpoints to a broad audience. In this paper we deployed tools that have been used to find subgroups automatically in social networks and applied them to the problem of distinguishing between two sides of a controversial issue based on patterns of online interaction. We explored the problem o...
